Two weeks ago, Kendrick Lamar dropped his sixth studio album, GNX. I’m excited about this, not only because I love him, but because on the sixth track, called “Reincarnated,” he talks about doing a Past Life Regression. In the second verse of the song, Kendrick goes:
“I did a Past Life Regression last year and it f*cked me up. Reincarnated on this earth for a hundred plus. Body after body, lesson after lesson…”
If you don’t know what a Past Life Regression is, I desperately want to tell you.
Past Life Regression is a therapy technique facilitated by a trained hypnotherapist where patients are guided into a deep state of hypnosis. While in this “superconscious state”, patients start recounting memories of their past lives, often citing current friends, family members, and fears as present in their previous incarnations. Typically, they wake up remembering nothing…but the whole session is recorded.
So in the song, Kendrick proceeds to tell us about his past lives–as a guitarist in 1947 Michigan with daddy issues to his time as a singer on the Chitlin Circuit with a heroin addiction. By the last verse, he’s talking about his current lifetime (as a 17-time Grammy winner) in the context of his tumultuous past–and I mean way past. In essence, he’s telling us how his session went.
Past Life Regression is widely considered pseudoscience, though its origins are surprisingly credible. Dr. Brian Weiss MD, a Columbia and Yale-trained psychiatrist accidentally discovered it in 1980 when a patient with a debilitating phobia of water went under hypnosis and started recalling detailed memories of past lives in which she had died while drowning. This experience was profoundly healing for her and, spoiler alert, girl can swim now. Dr. Weiss went on to do decades of research and case studies on this phenomenon, all documented in his book Many Lives, Many Masters. It’s one of my favorites.
I’ve never done a Past Life Regression, mainly because I’m intimidated by deep hypnosis. But I have done what I consider Past Life Regression’s little sister and it doesn’t require hypnosis. If you’re already on board with the reincarnation of it all, it has a much lower barrier to entry, and it’s called an Akashic Record Reading.
The Akashic Records is an etheric library that contains an energetic imprint of every lifetime…including all of yours. Anyone can learn how to access these records, but if you’re casually interested, you can book a session with someone who’s trained to read them. That’s what I did. And boy, was it a TREAT!
I went to Kristen Rice and to this day, she’s one of the most astonishingly accurate, grounded readers I’ve ever seen. Not only did she nail my family dynamic in ways I still don’t understand, but she also told me I was once a priestess in the temple of Aphrodite who did sex magic in Ancient Greece.
Yeah :)
I also learned that one of my best friends and I used to be Pagan witches together! “I’m seeing you two doing some type of ritualistic dance…in the woods…of pre-Christianity England?”
Checks out!
She told me that my boyfriend Jason and I didn’t have any past lives together. When I got sad, she said it was actually a beautiful thing because it meant that we are “not karmically tied” and our relationship is “of pure, free will.”
Okay!!!
I recommend Kristen’s Akashic Record Reading if only for a good time (update: Looks like her client books are closed right now, but you can sign up to get notified when she’s back). Bill Foss is also a respected reader I’m interested in trying (don’t be discouraged by the WordPress–that's how we know he’s an OG).
If you are interested in doing a reading, I suggest coming to your session prepared with questions. Here are the 10 questions I would bring:
10 Questions to Ask an Akashic Record Reader
How old is my soul?
What can you tell me about my soul's lineage?
Any significant past lives that stand out?
What talents, gifts, or abilities did I develop in my past lives?
Can you give me clarity on my soul’s purpose in this lifetime?
What is the biggest block I am facing right now?
Was I a witch, visionary, or healer in a past life?
Did I know ____ in a past life? What was the nature of our dynamic?
Parent/Caretaker
Sibling/Long-time friend
Romantic partner
Strained relationship that confuses me
What past life trauma do I have that needs to be resolved in this lifetime?
How can I connect to my higher self/guides more deeply every day?
…Hello? Are you still with me?
Whether you find this all mildly intriguing or utterly revolting, consider the idea that…it’s not that serious. I’ve gifted readings to skeptic friends and family members. Their experiences have all fallen on a spectrum from fun to profound. Plus, a reading just might be the motivation you need to heal those deep-seated insecurities or challenging relationships. I mean, nothing is more motivating than realizing you’ve been making the same mistakes for literally one thousand years!!!
And if you’re lucky, you’ll be like some of my friends who found out they have fairy origins. Or that they walked with Mary Magdelene! Or that they’re from the Pleiadian star system!
At the very least, you’ll have a crazy story to tell and one more thing in common with Kendrick Lamar.
Crying reading this ✨👯
